Cruising out of the port of Galveston

Introduction

Welcome to my exciting journey aboard the Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas cruise ship from the picturesque Port of Galveston. As a travel agent passionate about accessibility travel, I embarked on this remarkable adventure with a mix of anticipation and nervousness due to my own personal accessibility needs. Join me as I recount my experiences, share valuable insights, and provide essential tips for fellow travelers. Let’s set sail and uncover the enchantment that awaits!

Traveling to Galveston

When flying into Houston, I recommend Hobby Airport for its proximity to Galveston. In my case, I arrived at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to reunite with friends before the cruise. The hour-long drive from Houston to Galveston was well worth it. I opted for a comfortable Lyft ride, costing around $70. If you prefer a more cost-effective option, consider Uber or Lyft from Hobby Airport, which takes approximately 45 minutes.

Accessibility note: Travelers with mobility challenges should know that IAH’s check-in area and gate are on the lower level. Make use of the elevators for convenience. Also, brace yourself for a bit of walking from the boarding area to the gate. Fortunately, my little brother assisted me, making the journey more enjoyable.

Transportation Options

Beyond rideshares, several transportation options are available to ease your journey from the airport to Galveston. Galveston Express offers one-way and round-trip transfers, ranging from $30-75 per person. Complimentary transportation for small or foldable wheelchairs is provided. Still, a $50 fee per reservation is required for non-foldable wheelchairs and scooters due to limited luggage space. Another reliable choice is Galveston Saltwater Mom, which offers reasonably priced transportation services. For those residing within driving distance of the port, EZ Cruise Parking provides convenient parking facilities and shuttle services, including accessible shuttle buses with wheelchair lifts.

Accommodations and Activities

Regarding accommodations, Galveston offers an array of options tailored to different preferences. Here are my top three hotel recommendations, perfectly complementing the activities that Galveston has to offer:

  1. Springhill: Conveniently situated near the port, Springhill offers modern, comfortable accommodations, ensuring a restful stay before or after your cruise. With a range of amenities and excellent service, it’s an ideal choice for travelers seeking convenience and satisfaction.
  2. TownePlace: Designed for extended stays, TownePlace features spacious suites equipped with all the comforts of home. Enjoy the freedom of a fully equipped kitchen, separate living and sleeping areas, and many convenient amenities. Located close to the port, it’s a fantastic option for exploring Galveston’s attractions.
  3. Hilton Galveston Island: Indulge in luxury and relaxation at Hilton Galveston Island. With breathtaking ocean views, stylish rooms, and a range of amenities, including a pool and on-site dining, this hotel offers a truly memorable experience. Immerse yourself in the coastal charm of Galveston while remaining within reach of the port.

As for activities, Galveston provides something for everyone:

  1. Ghost of Galveston Tour: Embark on a spine-tingling journey into Galveston’s haunted history. Discover the eerie tales and haunting legends that give the city its distinctive character.
  2. Galveston Haunted Cemetery: Explore the atmospheric and hauntingly beautiful cemetery in Galveston. Stroll among the tombstones and uncover the mysteries that lie within.
  3. Pokemon Go Tour: Ideal for both kids and Pokemon enthusiasts, engage in a fun-filled Pokemon Go tour. Capture virtual creatures and explore the intriguing streets of Galveston on this interactive adventure. If you like therse tours you can book them here: Tours

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Terminal

The Port of Galveston boasts a state-of-the-art terminal, Terminal 3, offering a seamless and enjoyable embarkation experience. Checking in and boarding the ship took less than ten minutes, as the port has streamlined its efficient processes. A dedicated line for guests with mobility challenges ensures a smooth and stress-free journey. I had the pleasure of having my brother accompany me through this line, further enhancing the experience. Kudos to the port for their commitment to accessibility!
