Safety Tips for Solo/Female Travelers

Believe it or not, solo traveling is one of the most rewarding travel experiences out there.  You’ll go at your pace, only do the things that interest you, and overall, you’ll vacation on your terms and your terms only.  As rewarding as these experiences can be, you’ll need to take a few extra precautions to ensure your safety.

  • Be alert to your surroundings at all times

Pay attention to your environment and the people around you! It’s hard to notice if someone is following you if you have your headphones in your ears. If you need to run, note where you could go for help. It’s better to be a little paranoid than to be harassed, robbed, or worse. If something feels wrong or you get a bad vibe from someone you are speaking with, find a way out of that situation.

  • Keep Your Valuables Hidden

The key reason for this is that many tourist areas have pickpockets and thieves who will target those with expensive items in sight. Only take your gadgets out when you are using them. Keep your valuables in a separate, smaller bag and keep it by your side. Purchase an anti-theft bag, if possible. Always move your bag to the front of your body in crowded spaces, and never stick your phone in your pockets!

  • Make Copies of Your Travel Documents

Losing important travel documents in a foreign country is a pain and a difficult situation. Having photocopies or even a photo of the documents saved on your computer or smartphone can be very useful. These photos can show local authorities that you have a valid visa, and it will make it a lot easier to arrange replacement documents should you need help from your local embassy.

  • Let Someone Know Your Travel Plans

Whether you’re visiting local sites or heading abroad for a time, make sure someone back home knows of your plans. Give a friend or family member a copy of your itinerary and flight details. If you don’t have a fully fleshed out itinerary, don’t worry. A rough idea of your movements is better than nothing. While at your target location, post social media updates and messaging to share your journey with family and friends.

  • Try to learn a little of the language before you travel.

Once you learn the language of where you’ll travel, you’ll be able to navigate everyday activities easily. Mastering the language is not necessary. Knowing how to order food, ask about transportation schedules, and understand basic phrases can be lifesaving.

  • Research the destination dangers and local scams.

Always do your research! Learn everything you can about the country, read blogs, and ask in forums and Facebook groups. Check out the state department’s travel advisories for your destination. Ask other solo female travelers about their experience visiting the country. Avoid making assumptions and trust the facts.

  • Try to blend in

Dress the way locals do! It’s important to do some research before traveling and learn about the local customs. Try to be respectful of the local customs and not draw too much attention to yourself.

  • Know your emergency numbers

While purchasing an international phone plan while traveling abroad is not a requirement, an affordable phone with a pay-as-you-go SIM card can be helpful in an emergency. Be sure to save the number of the local/ tourist police or your embassy in your contacts.

Enjoy your trip. Enjoy the freedom of a solo trip, and just be sure to be safe!
